Boccia | Mark Burton

The Boccia afternoon at Doreen Capstan House was run by Howard from the Leyton Orient Community Sports Programme (LOCSP). It’s a regular event that residents in the community for senior citizens always enjoy and look forward to.

‘Everyone joins in,’ explained Lil, one of the participants. ‘It’s friendly but competitive and we really enjoy the social side of the activity.’

When Pam, another one of the participants moved into Doreen Capstan House she couldn’t believe ‘how quiet it could be with all these people under one roof.’ Residents began to organise coffee mornings, play dominoes and they bought their own pool table. ‘The football club (LOCSP) have been brilliant. We do Boccia, Tai-Chi, Movement and Music and we even have coaches come in and help us with Silver Surfing sessions. They have made all the difference.’

‘People sometimes describe us as elderly,’ she continues, ‘and when they do I think ‘flipping cheek! We’re not elderly. We’re senior citizens!’
