As part of the E17 Art Trail, 2009 – Image17 set out to document the huge variety of local leisure and social groups within the Borough and were awarded a grant from Arts Council England for the exhibition.
The project aims to highlight and record the rich, diverse and sometimes unusual hobbies and activities which bond communities and create friendships.
Within Waltham Forest, there are independent social groups for almost every conceivable activity. From the Fuchsia and Pelargonium Society to Operatic Societies, Scrap-bookers to Ramblers – each week, hundreds of local residents take part in little known activities which enrich their lives. As part of an ongoing project, the photographers have started to document these groups, wishing to make their interesting and varied activities known to the wider public.
These images formed part of a group exhibition, called Meet, which ran 5th – 13th September 2009. The exhibition was at The Old Glass Factory,15 Hoe Street, E17.
